At the 2025 (10th) New Energy Industry Expo - Hydrogen Energy Industry Development Forum hosted by SMM Information & Technology Co., Ltd. (SMM), Zhang Yuxiang, Co-founder and Director of Ai Hydrogen Technology (Suzhou) Co., Ltd., discussed the topic "Current Status and Prospects of Pure Magnesium-Based Solid-State Hydrogen Storage." Hydrogen Energy Bottleneck: Storage and Transportation

Upstream Resources Abundant: Global hydrogen production is expected to reach 500-800 million mt by 2050.

Downstream Robust Demand: Hydrogen storage and transportation, chemical transportation, electromechanical daily health.

Overview of Hydrogen Storage and Transportation

Solid-state hydrogen storage addresses the challenges of high-density hydrogen storage and safe application, with magnesium-based hydrogen storage materials offering higher practical value.

Principles and Advantages of Magnesium-Based Hydrogen Storage

Hydrogen Storage Principle

Magnesium-based hydrogen storage involves a chemical reaction that stores hydrogen in magnesium metal, forming metal hydrides.

When releasing hydrogen, the metal hydrides decompose under heating, reverting to magnesium metal, enabling hydrogen recycling with good reversibility.

Technical Advantages:

Magnesium-based hydrogen storage materials have high energy density, with a theoretical hydrogen storage capacity of 7.6%, significantly higher than other hydrogen storage materials, making them suitable for large-scale hydrogen storage and transportation, portable devices, and mobile applications.

They exhibit excellent cycle stability, maintaining high hydrogen storage efficiency after multiple cycles, with a long life, reducing replacement costs.

Environmental Friendliness:

The extraction and processing of magnesium are relatively environmentally friendly, producing no harmful substances during hydrogen storage, and the released hydrogen can be reconverted into magnesium metal, generating no waste, contributing to the sustainable development of hydrogen energy.

Performance Optimization Directions for Magnesium-Based Hydrogen Storage Materials

Material Modification: High hydrogen absorption and desorption temperatures, slow hydrogen absorption and desorption rates.

Industrial Applications of Magnesium-Based Hydrogen Storage

Ai Hydrogen Magnesium-Based Hydrogen Storage Materials

Solid Magnesium Hydride:

Magnesium hydride, at room temperature and pressure, has the highest hydrogen absorption rate (mass) of 7.6% among all reversible hydrogen storage materials.

Hydrogen Release Methods for Magnesium-Based Hydrogen Storage Materials

Pyrolysis:

Heating the base, releasing hydrogen through a normal-pressure hydrogen bottle.

Hydrolysis:

Adding an appropriate amount of warm water to a cup, then placing an appropriate amount of magnesium hydride, directly releasing hydrogen through a hydration reaction.

Application Process of Magnesium-Based Hydrogen Storage Technology

Application Markets:

Primary Market: Hydrogen storage and transportation;

Secondary Market: Electromechanical, industrial, transportation, and daily health.
